Front Loader Aussie Bulldog Shader
From the bench of Brandyn Feldman – June 2025
There’s a letter from Sailor Jerry dated 1972 that’s stuck with me. He wrote about DC ripple, weird coil behaviors, and the endless hunt for “clean” current. He mentioned guys swinging armatures by hand to relieve tension, wrapping coils based on magnet polarity, and troubleshooting through instinct, not science. It sounds superstitious—because it was. But it was real. They were chasing feel and power the best way they knew how. That letter became a map for me.
This machine—the Front Loader Aussie Bulldog Shader—is built from following that map while forging my own path forward.
Over the years, I’ve become obsessed with Bulldog geometry. I’ve rebuilt it, reshaped it, worn out springs, tuned coils, adjusted angles—just to get it to hit right without compromise. I wanted a machine that punches bold color in like a proper shader should, but still runs smooth under load. No stutter. No guessing. Just clean, even power.
This machine is built from A-36 steel, CNC machined and surface ground on all critical faces. That part matters. A lot of folks skip the surface grinding. I don’t. Because precision matters—flatness, squareness, alignment—those things change how a machine runs. I’ve built out a high-end machine shop with HAAS mills, jigs, and grinders just to hit those tolerances the way I demand. If I’m going to sign my name to it, it better be damn near perfect.
The Front Loader vise makes for fast tube swaps, with a secure side-load clamp that holds strong all day. The 1.250” coil cores and medium geometry are tuned for saturation—bold lines, rich fills, and the kind of color that stays in the skin like Sailor Jerry Collins used to do it. This machine is for tattooers who want that bold, solid punch-on-demand. The kind of saturation that made us fall in love with tattooing in the first place.
As for the feel—this machine is balanced, not light and twitchy, not back-heavy and fatiguing. You can run it all day, keep a steady hand, and still have something left in your wrist at the end of the shift. It works—not just for a few passes, but for the long haul.
In all my time studying machines and listening to the old-timers, I’ve always noticed one thing: there was a superstition around what made a machine “good.” Everybody had their own theory—spring length, wire wrap direction, core material, you name it. I always respected that, but I wanted to take it further. I wanted to see if I could take the myth and turn it into science. I’ve been chasing that answer for years—and with this machine, I’m damn close.
This isn’t a reproduction. It’s not retro. It’s not a nostalgia trip. It’s the next evolution in a long line of machines built by tattooers for tattooers—refined by grit, obsession, and time spent in the trenches.
This machine will kick ass all day and leave the pen pushers in the dust.
Not because it’s flashy—because it works.
If you know what you're doing, this machine will back you up.
If you don’t, it’ll teach you.
And if you're still chasing greatness—this one's built for you!!
