Coil vs rotary — which should I learn on, and which is better for lining vs shading?
For anyone starting out, we point straight to the W1.25 O-Liner and W1.25 O-Shader. These two are built specifically to give a new artist a stable, reliable foundation on coil — rather than getting lost in the broader coil-versus-rotary debate before they've even found their footing.
What's the difference between a $150 coil machine and a $500-plus one?
You're not paying for the machine, you're paying for experience. A higher-end coil machine is built in a high-end machine shop with attention to every detail — precision, tolerances, and craftsmanship that a mass-produced budget machine simply can't match.
Why do some coil machines cost so much more than others (hand-built vs mass-produced)?
A hand-built machine carries vision, drive, design, and genuine understanding of tattooing itself — built by someone who tattoos, not just assembles parts. A factory machine is often put together by someone with no real understanding of tattooing at all; it's just nuts and bolts. That difference in intent shows up in how the machine performs and lasts.
Are American-made coil machines actually better, or is that just marketing?
It comes down to who's building it and how it's made — high-end machining, careful assembly, and a builder who understands tattooing produces a fundamentally different tool than a mass-produced import. It's less about a flag and more about the standard of craftsmanship behind it.
Setup & Tuning
How do I tune a coil machine properly (gap, spring tension, contact screw)?
It depends on the style of machine you're setting up. As a rule of thumb, a liner runs at a shorter stroke while a shader runs at a much larger stroke — though plenty of artists run liners as shaders and vice versa. There are many methodologies here, and we'll be going deeper into tuning specifics in upcoming blog posts and how-to videos.
Why does my machine sound "off" or run hot?
There are a lot of possible causes: hysteresis, poor power input from a mismatched power supply, an improper setup, friction in the needle and tube setup, a bad clip cord, worn or breaking-down springs, or simply a lack of preventative maintenance. It's usually one of these variables, sometimes a combination.
What's the right voltage to run a coil machine at?
Voltage is entirely based on your own setup and comfort. The best approach is to run test setups and dial in the voltage that feels right once the machine is tuned and ready to tattoo — there's no single universal number.
Why does my liner keep going out of tune mid-session?
This usually comes down to setup issues — often coil alignment, or a spring that's losing its tension over time.
Maintenance & Longevity
How often do springs and contact points need replacing, and how do I maintain a coil machine long-term?
Keeping the springs and machine clean is the single biggest factor in longevity — it extends spring life and keeps your tune holding longer. Small, consistent preventative maintenance goes a long way. We'll be covering specific PM tips and tricks in blog and video form on the site.
Can coil machines be repaired, or are they disposable once something breaks?
Coil machines can be repaired indefinitely. They're rebuildable in the field or can be sent back in for a full rebuild — they're about the most maintainable tattoo tool on the market. Compare that to many overseas-manufactured rotaries, which can become effectively disposable once something goes wrong and service isn't readily available.
Build & Craftsmanship
What makes a hand-built coil machine different from a factory one?
Vision, drive, design, love, and a genuine understanding of what makes a good tattoo machine. A hand-built machine is made by someone who understands tattooing. A factory machine is often assembled by someone who doesn't — it's just nuts and bolts put together without that deeper understanding.
Why do old-school builders (Paul Rogers-lineage) still command such respect and price?
Magic, love, lineage, respect, heritage, tradition. Some things in this craft simply can't be replicated by a factory — they're earned over generations.
Do CNC-machined parts actually perform better than cast or stamped parts, or is it just aesthetics?
It's genuinely situational and depends on the application — it's hard to make a blanket claim that one always outperforms the other.
Buyer Hesitation
Is coil "dying" — should I even bother learning it in 2026?
Not even close. Coil is a hundred-year-old technology that works perfectly. It's actually one of the best ways to put a needle into the skin because it's self-regulating and has a natural stopping point built into how it runs.
Will I regret buying coil if the industry's moving toward rotary?
Coil isn't going anywhere — it's proven, self-regulating technology that's lasted a century for good reason. It remains one of the most maintainable and repairable tools in the industry.
What's the resale value on a quality coil machine?
It depends heavily on the seller. Brand reputation matters most, but condition, how hastily the artist is selling, and other variables all play into it — there's no fixed answer.
