What is a rotary tattoo machine, and how does it work?
A rotary tattoo machine drives the needle bar off a spinning motor instead of an electromagnetic coil. The motor's continuous rotation gets converted into up-and-down needle motion, either through a cam sitting directly on the motor shaft, direct drive, like the Revolute, or through a geared mechanism. That's the core mechanical difference from coil: a coil machine pulls and releases the needle bar through electromagnets and springs, a rotary spins it through continuously, which is why rotaries tend to run smoother and quieter.
Direct drive vs. pen-style or wireless, what's the real difference?
Direct drive means the needle bar is driven straight off the motor shaft with minimal gear reduction between them, which is what the Revolute is. Pen-style or wireless is a form factor choice, battery vs. cord, compact body, not a competing mechanism, and plenty of pen-style machines are direct drive internally too. The real question is corded vs. wireless and direct drive vs. geared, not "pen vs. rotary."
What's the difference between a $150 rotary and a $400-plus one like the Revolute?
Same logic as coil: you're paying for the machine shop it came out of. CNC-machined aluminum, a precision-pressed bearing in the flywheel, and tolerances held tight enough that the machine stays consistent shift after shift is a different build standard than a stamped, mass-produced import.
Why do hand-built rotaries cost more than mass-produced ones?
A hand-built rotary is designed and machined by someone who tattoos, tuned around how a needle actually needs to move in skin, not just around what's cheap to stamp out. Same distinction as coil: intent and understanding show up in how the machine performs and holds up.
What's the best rotary tattoo machine for beginners, or for switching over from coil?
For either, we point to the Revolute. Parts & Terminology
What does "direct drive" actually mean?
The needle bar connects straight to a cam on the motor shaft, no gear train between them. Fewer parts between the motor and the needle means less energy lost and a more consistent stroke, but it also means less natural cushioning than a geared design.
What's the flywheel, and what does the 3.2mm vs. 3.8mm size change?
The flywheel is the disc on the motor shaft that the needle bar rides on. Its size sets your stroke length, how far the needle travels on each pass. The Revolute's interchangeable flywheels let you swap between a 3.2mm stroke and a 3.8mm stroke on the same machine instead of buying two machines.
What's a needle bar, and how's it different from a coil machine's armature bar?
Same job, different mechanism. The armature bar on a coil machine gets pulled by electromagnets and snapped back by a spring. The needle bar on a rotary rides directly on the flywheel/cam, so its motion is continuous and circular-driven instead of pulled and released.
Does the Revolute run traditional needles, or just cartridges?
Both. The chuck's gold tooth clamp holds a standard tube and traditional needle setup, and the adjustable clicking cartridge grip runs cartridge needles on the same machine. You're not locked into one needle system, you run whichever setup you already work in.
Clip cord vs. RCA vs. wireless, what is the Revolute?
Clip cord. It runs on a standard clip cord setup, same power supply as your coil machines, no battery or wireless pen module involved.
What does voltage range actually control on a rotary?
Voltage sets motor speed, which sets how fast the needle bar cycles. The Revolute runs 4 to 11V; lower in that range for a lighter touch, higher for more speed and power.
Setup & Tuning
How do I dial in voltage on the Revolute?
Start low in the 4-11V range and work up until the machine feels right for what you're doing, lining or shading. There's no single correct number, it's setup and hand dependent, same as coil.
Why does a direct drive rotary feel stiffer or harsher than a coil machine?
Less mechanical cushioning between the motor and the needle. A coil machine's spring and armature setup naturally absorbs some of the hit; a direct drive needle bar doesn't have that built in the same way. The Revolute is built to close that gap and still feel like coil in hand, but the mechanical difference is real.
Do I need to change anything switching between lining and shading on the Revolute?
Mainly voltage and your flywheel choice. Lower voltage and the smaller 3.2mm flywheel for tighter, more controlled work; higher voltage and the 3.8mm flywheel when you want more stroke and power behind it.
Why does my rotary run so much quieter than my coil machine?
No contact screw snapping open and closed, no springs vibrating against a frame. The motor spins continuously instead of buzzing through make-and-break contact, so there's less mechanical noise to begin with.
Maintenance & Longevity
How long does the motor in a direct drive rotary actually last?
This comes down to voltage, duty cycle, and how well it's maintained. Staying within the rated 4-11V range and not pushing it past what a session calls for is the single biggest factor in motor longevity. Sealed precision motors from a quality build are designed to hold up to years of regular studio use.
Can I service a rotary myself, or does it need to go back to the builder?
This is a real difference from coil. A coil machine's springs, contact screw, and armature bar are all field-serviceable parts you can swap yourself. A rotary's motor is a sealed unit, so if the motor itself fails, that's a builder repair, not a kitchen-table fix. How do I clean the Revolute without damaging the motor or bearing?
Wipe the body and grip down, keep liquid away from the motor housing and the flywheel bearing. Unlike a coil frame, you're not spraying disinfectant into the internals; the sealed motor means you're cleaning the outside, not flushing through moving contact points.
Does the CNC aluminum body need the same care as an iron coil frame?
No. Aluminum doesn't rust the way iron does, so you don't need the Renaissance Wax routine from the coil FAQ. Regular wipe-down is enough to keep the powder coat and finish looking right.
Is there anything to lubricate on a direct drive rotary?
The flywheel bearing on the Revolute is a precision-pressed sealed bearing, it isn't something you're servicing or oiling yourself. Keep the housing clean and dry and leave the internals alone.

What makes the Revolute different from a mass-produced rotary?
Designed by Brandyn Feldman using CAD/CAM and machined in-house on Haas equipment, with a precision-pressed flywheel bearing rather than a pressed-in bushing or plastic bearing seat. It's built to the same standard as our coil machines, just applied to a different mechanism.
Why build a direct drive instead of a geared or cam-cushioned rotary?
Fewer moving parts between the motor and the needle means less variation shot to shot and less that can go wrong long-term. The goal with the Revolute was a machine that keeps coil's familiar feedback without giving up the smoothness and consistency rotary is known for. Direct drive was the simplest way to get there without compromising either.
Who actually invented the rotary tattoo machine?
Samuel O'Reilly's original 1891 tattoo machine, the same patent that started the coil lineage, was itself a modified version of Thomas Edison's 1876 Autographic Printing Pen, a rotary electric device. So the very first tattoo machine was technically rotary-driven before coil became the dominant design for the next century. Worth noting Charlie Wagner's well-known 1904 patent, often cited in tattoo machine history, was actually for vertical coil placement, not a rotary mechanism.
Do CNC-machined rotary bodies perform better than cast ones?
Tighter tolerances mean the flywheel, bearing, and needle bar stay aligned the way they were designed to, shot after shot. A cast or stamped body can vary piece to piece in ways that show up as inconsistency in the machine's feel.
Buyer Hesitation
Rotary vs. coil tattoo machine, which one should you choose?
Neither is objectively better, they're different tools with different feel and maintenance profiles, and this isn't a trend question, both are still standard equipment. Rotary tends to run quieter and more consistently out of the gate; coil tends to be more serviceable and self-regulating long term. The Revolute exists specifically because you shouldn't have to choose, it's built to give a coil-trained hand rotary's smoothness without giving up the feel.
Will a direct drive rotary hold up as well as a coil machine long term?
Durability comes down to build quality on both sides. A coil machine's advantage is that nearly every wear part, springs, contact screw, armature bar, can be swapped in the field indefinitely. A rotary's motor is sealed, so its lifespan is more about how well that one component is built and how it's run. A precision-machined direct drive built to hold tight tolerances is built to go the distance, but the maintenance profile is different, not worse.
What's the resale value on a hand-built rotary like the Revolute?
Same as coil: it depends heavily on the seller. Brand reputation, condition, and how hastily someone's selling all play into it more than any fixed number.
