Red Front Loader Aussie Bulldog Shader – Custom Coil Tattoo Machine
From the desk of BDF – July 2025
There’s a letter from Sailor Jerry dated 1972 that’s always stuck with me. In it, he wrote about DC ripple, strange coil behaviors, and the never-ending hunt for clean current. He talked about artists swinging armatures by hand to relieve tension, wrapping coils based on magnetic polarity, and tuning by feel, not science. It sounds superstitious, because it was. But it was real. They were chasing feel and power the only way they knew how. That letter became a map for me.
This machine—the Red Front Loader Aussie Bulldog Shader—was built by following that map, while carving my own path forward.
I’ve spent years chasing Bulldog geometry. I’ve rebuilt it, reshaped it, worn out springs, tuned coils, and adjusted angles just to get it to hit right without compromise. I wanted a shader that drives bold color in like it’s supposed to, but still runs smooth under load. No stutter. No guesswork. Just clean, even power.
This one’s built from A36 steel, powder coated red, and every critical face is CNC machined and surface ground. That part matters. A lot of people skip the surface grinding. I don’t. Precision matters—flatness, squareness, alignment. Those things change how a machine runs. I’ve built out a proper shop with HAAS mills, grinders, and jigs just to hold these tolerances the way I want them. If I’m putting my name on it, it better be right.
One of the details I’m most proud of is the front spring. I surface grind each one down to a precise .0165". That exact thickness gives this shader the best punchy feel—snappy on the hit, but still smooth enough to lay in color without chewing things up. It’s a small number, but it makes a big difference.
The front-loading vise makes for fast tube swaps, with a strong side clamp that holds all day. The 1.250" coil cores and medium geometry are tuned for saturation—solid lines, rich fills, and bold color that stays in the skin. It’s built for tattooers who want a clean punch on demand. The kind of hit that keeps your color where it belongs.
As far as feel goes—this machine is balanced. Not light and twitchy, not back-heavy or fatiguing. You can run it all day, keep a steady hand, and still have something left in the wrist at the end of your shift. It’s made to work, not just for a few passes, but for real sessions, real skin, and real results.
Over the years, I’ve heard every theory on what makes a coil machine good. Spring length, wire direction, frame material, you name it. Everyone has their own version of the truth. I’ve always respected that. But I also wanted to take it further. I’ve been trying to bridge the gap between myth and measurable performance for years. With this machine, I’m damn close.
This isn’t a throwback. It’s not a reproduction. It’s not retro for the sake of it. This is a modern Bulldog shader, built from the ground up to meet the needs of real tattooers. It’s the next step in a long line of machines built by tattooers, for tattooers, refined through time, experience, and obsession.
It’ll kick all day and leave the pen pushers behind.
Not because it’s flashy, but because it works.
If you know what you’re doing, this machine will back you up.
If you don’t, it’ll teach you.
And if you’re still chasing greatness, this one’s built for you.
